Build from the ground up
Excavation, a suitable compacted sub-base, bedding and edge restraints matter as much as the surface. The specification should reflect ground conditions and expected traffic.
Plan drainage and aftercare
Agree where surface water will go. Conventional blocks are not automatically permeable. Ask about appropriate drainage, jointing sand, cleaning and weed control.
